Picnic Pretzels ( Great activity for little kids)

1 envelope dry yeast
1 1/2 Tbsp sugar
1 1/2 C. warm water
1 tsp. salt
4-5 C. flour
1 egg, beaten
coarse salt

1. In a large bowl, mix the yeast and sugar in the warm water, let sit about 5 minutes.
2. Stir in the salt and 2-3 cups of the flour to make a soft batter.
3. Keeping your hands dusted with flour, knead in additional flour to make a dough stiff enough to roll out.
4. Take a lump of dough about the size of a lemon, and roll it between your hands to make a rope about as thick as your finger.
5. Twist the rope into a pretzel shape, heart, alphabet letter or whatever shape you want, place on greased cookie sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
6. Bake at 425 deg. for 12 to 15 minutes until the pretzels are golden brown.
